Inspired to become a hairstylist, but don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips to get you on the path of a successful hairstyling career:

  • Start by going to a few of the salons in the area that you think might be places you’d like to work. Talk to the owners there and find out where their employees enjoyed going to school. And be sure to ask the owners where they personally studied, as well.
  • Make a list of these schools and go take a tour. If you don’t have time for a full-fledged visit, you could also simply stop in to pick up some information or do some good research online. Then choose the one that seems to be the best fit for you and your personal goals for your hairstyling career.
  • When you’re actually in beauty school, we can’t overstress the importance of doing an apprenticeship or shadowing program. Speak with a couple different salon owners and see if they have a learning program. And if for some reason there aren’t any apprenticeship programs in your area, ask them if you can do some job shadowing or at least come in and observe.
  • If you can find a stylist who is willing to give you tips and tricks as they’re working and also allow you to ask questions throughout the day, this will be monumentally helpful. You can then take what you’ve learned with you to school the next day and actually use these techniques in practice!

An apprenticeship or shadowing experience will really set you up for the future – either by getting you a job at the salon where you worked or by simply bolstering your resume so that you can start out with confidence. Good luck on your journey, #BeautyKOs! And please don’t be shy to reach out to us with questions. We are here to help make your hairstyling dreams come true!

For some, hairstyling’s a job. For others, it’s a passion: an innate gift that lights them up and drives them to outperform and overdeliver. Michelle G. is definitely the latter.
