Don’t Stop Styling: How to Add a few Extras for Extra Income

Here’s one dilemma for hairstylists and anyone running a business in the service industry: You only have so many hours in a day. As a result, your income is limited by time and the amount of money you charge for that time.

So, until you can charge the same amount commanded by the top stylists in the industry, start exploring ways to increase your income without working 12 to 15 hours a day, six to seven days a week. You can accomplish that goal by thinking about the extra services and products you can offer in addition to your styling services.

Here are a few to consider:

1. Brow services. American’s obsession with obtaining the perfect eyebrows doesn’t appear to be ceasing. As Shape magazine puts it, the effort it takes to tame unruly eyebrows is well worth the effort because “good brows make you look amazing.” Also, American Salon magazine noted that adding brow services, as a salon recently did by offering a brow bar, can significantly increase your revenue because minimal time is required to complete the process.

2. Add products. This actually is a no-brainer. If you’re taking the time to find the products that work wonders for your clientele, why not sell some of them that they will need to use anyway? Stock up on shampoos and conditioners. Also, if you personally like a line of makeup, nail polish or skincare items, find out if you can get them at a wholesale price and sell them at retail. This type of arrangement could especially be ideal if you partner with a local entrepreneur who has a line of organic skincare products, for instance.

3. Provide package deals. Many clients can’t resist a package deal. Design several packages that make sense for different clientele. For instance, you can offer a discounted package that includes a cut and a shave for your male clients, and a deep conditioning color, cut and brow shaping as part of another package. Adding another service for a client who is already in your chair can provide extra income without taking a significant amount of time.
